Free Ways to Celebrate Australia Day in Brisbane

Finding free ways to celebrate Australia Day in Brisbane will be easy this year thanks to the epic Australia Day Festival. The following are just some of the many wonderful events that will take place as part of this amazing free festival.

From 10am the State Library of Queensland will be providing a range of classic Aussie entertainment for people of all ages. Watch one of your favourite Australian movies, check out the Best of the West End Film Festival, relax and enjoy Storytelling in the Corner or be amazed by the intricate and enthralling ‘Our Dreaming; animating country’. Kids are in for a special treat as Tim Jackman will perform his singing and dancing versions of classic nursery rhymes, otherwise known as Hickory Dickory Rock.

Kangaroo Crew

The Children’s Art Centre at the Gallery Of Modern Art presents the Kangaroo Crew, a wonderful interactive exhibition created by Gordon Hookey, an Indigenous Australian artist. Designed especially for children and families, this inspiring piece revolves around the beautiful story of the Sacred Hill. Embracing a range of multimedia that make it easy to get involved, this fun, positive and colourful exhibition will be open from 10am until 5pm on Australia Day.


Creaturama

Bust out your creative skills this Australia Day by taking part in an origami making workshop of monstrous proportions at the Queensland Museum. Participants will be provided with recycled materials and shown how to make their own diorama of origami plants and creatures. These fantastic workshops start at 10:30am and 1:30pm and are a great way for people of all ages to have some fun and learn something new. Workshops are two hours long and entry is via a gold coin donation.

Triple M’s Pluggers Gift

If you love your thongs and can move pretty fast in them, head to Brisbane’s South Bank and sprint your way to cash prizes in the Triple M Pluggers Gift race. The main event will take place at Noon and will consist of a 75 metre dash with the winner taking home a trophy and $1000 in cash.

From Page to Stage

This magnificent free exhibition will be held from 10am until 4pm at the Tony Gould Gallery and traces the evolution of costume from design through to production. Featuring some of Brisbane’s finest costume designers and works from the QPAC Museum Collection, this impressive display is a must for anyone interested in fashion.


Live Entertainment on the South Bank

From 10am Brisbane’s South Bank will come alive, showcasing a huge variety of live entertainment that will include live music, dance, magic and even a wildlife presentation. Among the many great performers will be Getano Bann, Selaphonic, Little Odessa and Kooii. The South Bank will also host a Young Designers Market, an incredible sand sculpture exhibition, 3D chalk art and much more. Best of all, there will be an Australia Day fireworks spectacular starting at 7:30pm.

Barbie on the Green

One of the best ways to enjoy Brisbane’s Australia Day Festival is to sit back and relax at the Barbie on the Green hosted by the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. From 12:15pm until 6:45pm join the crowds soaking up the sun in the South Bank Parklands and be treated to some of Australia’s finest up and coming musical talent.

There is no better way to celebrate Australia Day than by getting out and being active, and you don’t need to spend a cent to get involved.
