Simple, Scary and Spectacular Halloween Recipes

Halloween is almost here again and there is no better way to get into the spirit of this fun holiday than by making some delicious and disturbing treats. The following recipes are sure to make you the spooky star of your scary shindig this year.

Witches Fingers

Scary Halloween Recipes
These creepy snacks are extremely easy to make and are guaranteed to freak out kids and adults alike.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ¼ cups White Flour
  • 225 g Butter
  • 2/3 cup Icing Sugar
  • 1 tube Red Food Colouring
  • 1 cup Sliced Almonds


Directions:

1) Pre-heat your oven to 150C (300F)

2) Using a mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until smooth; then slowly add the flour, mixing it thoroughly. Place the mixture in a clean bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour

3) Take small balls of the chilled mixture and form them into finger-like shapes. Don’t forget to include knuckles and press a space for the fingernails to be added later

4) Place the fingers onto an ungreased cookie tray, then bake on the middle rack of the oven until lightly browned

5) Once the fingers have cooled, add a small amount of food colouring to the space on each finger where the nail will be, then place one sliced almond on top of the food colouring to act as the nail

6) Refrigerate the fingers for 30 minutes to allow the nails to set, then serve, howl and enjoy!

Chocolate Spider Cakes

Spiders never looked as terrifyingly tasty as they do on these stylish cakes.

Ingredients:

  • 250g Butter
  • 250g Dark Chocolate
  • 6 Eggs
  • 310g Castor Sugar
  • 70g Plain Flour
  • 90g Plain Yoghurt
  • 500g Icing Sugar
  • 30g Dark Cocoa Powder
  • 48 Tic Tacs
  • 200g Liquorice


Directions:

1) Pre-heat your oven to 170C (340F)

2) Bring a pot of water to a boil then reduce to a low simmer. Place the butter and chocolate in a bowl on top of the simmering water and melt slowly

3) In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and castor sugar for 10 minutes, then fold through the chocolate/ butter mixture

4) Slowly add the flour to the chocolate/butter/egg/ sugar mix, gently folding it through until it is combined thoroughly

5) Spoon the mixture into a greased cup cake pan so that each cup is 2/3 full then bake for 15 minutes

6) While the cakes are cooking, mix together the yoghurt with 300 grams of icing sugar in a small bowl

7) In a separate bowl, combine the remaining icing sugar and cocoa then slowly add enough cold water that the mixture becomes smooth, but not runny

8) Once the cakes are cooked, allow them to cool then cover the top of each cake with the yoghurt/icing sugar mixture

9) Add 2 blobs of the chocolate/cocoa mixture to each cake to form the spider’s body and head

10) Cut the liquorice into thin strips 4 cm long and add them to the spider body as legs

11) Add 2 tic tacs to each spider’s head for eyes and your creepy creations are ready to be devoured


Cheesy Bat Bites

These tasty little critters will add a savoury shock to even the most menacing Halloween menu.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Ounces Cream Cheese
  • 8 Ounces Mild Goat Cheese
  • ¼ Cup Pesto
  • 1/2 Tbsp. Ground Black Pepper
  • 2 Tbsp. Poppy Seeds
  • 8 Black Olives Sliced in Half
  • 32 Peppercorns
  • 32 Large Corn Chips


Directions:

1) In a large bowl, use a wooden spoon to combine the cream cheese, goat cheese and pesto; once combined chill for 40 minutes

2) Once chilled, shape the cheese/pesto mixture into balls, using around 1 tablespoon of mix per ball

3) Mix the black pepper and poppy seeds together and spread onto a large plate, then roll the cheese balls in the mixture to provide a light coating

4) Add two olive slices to each ball for eyes and insert one peppercorn in each eye for the pupil

5) Insert one corn chip into either side of each ball for wings and your terrifying treats are ready to fly!
